If all the hardware stores sell slop lumber hoping contractors won't give a fuck and customers won't notice which I'm sure is what happens 90% of the time. I had to sift through 2x6s for like 15 minutes with the hardware jockey whistling nervously over my shoulder as I kept sifting through split board after split board. I might as well cut down my own trees and mill my own lumber and even cure it with all this split shit being sold. Has it always been like this ever since megacorps bought out the local mills?

I was building a kitchen shelf/stand recently and felt the same way. So much of it is total shit. Split, mangled, warped, twisted, and I have to sift through it all to find a couple decent boards. It's almost enough to put me off of wood working entirely.

Material is material. If you needed it to be that precision perfect, then you wouldn't choose wood in the first place. Most retail hardwoods are accurate beyond what OP is capable of measuring and construction spf lumber will be acceptable in a much wider tolerance for its applications.If the material is too warped for use, just don't buy it. No one is going to notice 1/8" of crown in your 8' walls, and you should be crowing them all in the same direction anyway.Are the hardwood overpriced? Yes, that's the cost of retail. Buy wholesale if you're moving quantity. Or search out better sources.
