I have some 316L stainless tig filler rod laying around and I thought about trying to bend it around a mandrel but have no clue if it will work. I saw on some manufacturer sites that they make some of their springs out of 316 but this filler wire seems kinda ductile. Does it need heat treatment or does it work harden?
I need to make a pair of springs but couldn't find the exact size for sale and for some reason nobody in my vicinity sells music wire

Stainless work hardens very easily. Not sure if it will be enough to make a good long lasting spring though. Order up some music wire to have on hand. Do any of the hardware stores around you sell anything close to the right size? You can always buy a longer spring and cut it to length, or I have even taken extension springs of a close size and wife diameter and stretched them out to make compression springs. Get creative.

Welding rod is not the same alloy as the base metal they're used for you will never get them to behave the same.

I worked in a spring factory for a while and most if not all went from the coiler directly into an oven and then i believe an oil quench
