I used to have ant problems every summer in Australia. We have dogs so we tend to avoid any harmful chemicals. Bait stations didn't work very well, there was a reduction but they were expensive and never completely solved the problem.
The best way we found was to mix up some thick, sticky sugar syrup and leave it near their entry point. Leave them alone and replace it when it dries up. All the sugar will make the ants fat, lazy and sterile, so they will naturally die off. I'm just starting to have them come back again, but it's been about 4 years since I've last done the sugar syrup and I constantly leave attractive things around for them (food scraps, empty Coke and beer cans etc). Your mileage may vary as they are different ants, but well worth a try.
