Pokémon isn't Sazae-San, it had a plot.Plus Pokémon was nothing but a a scape goat for WB, in reality those Spielberg cartoons were produced at a loss and by the late 90s Spielberg wasn't as popular as he was in the early 90s (Spielberg was funding these shows with his own wallet, no sponsors were used other then whoever TMS hired (namely Hitachi, Nissay and Konami) to bump up their budget), by 1999 Spielberg had ties with Dreamworks and asked Katzenberg to use money he was saving for Shrek to pay for 50% of his WB shows and he said no, he even asked WB themselves and they ended up canceling his shows because they couldn't take the loss (WB only took Spielberg's shows because Spielberg was taking the loss and was using movie money to pay for those shows, if WB had to take the loss they would've rejected Tiny Toons for costing too much) and use Pokémon as a scape goat because it cost next to nothing to license (it's success caused Japan's anime industry to jack up it's rates from $7000 for 70 episodes to $5 million for just 13 episodes to make sure this never happened again).

I see it all the time, especially college age people playing the games or with lots of pins or other merch from it on their person. Pokemon is literally the most common IP I see fuckin TATTOOS of on people aged like 18-35~, it feels like. There is so little depth or substance to this shit that by the time I was like 12 I was already completely over it. What do people get out of this that make them love it so much to the point of wanted to get things form it permanently inked onto their body? Just surreal to me.

pokemon didnt start out on cruise control, that came much later. it started out as a mind-blowing concept of a show where, 22 minutes at a time, you get a piece of an ongoing story that never ends, and is working toward something. Freakazoid was also mind-blowing due to its completely off the wall humor. They were both among my favorites.

It's the appealing premise of a kid going out into a fantasy world to catch monsters that can shoot electricity and breath fire and shit and having them fight, with a built-in fanbase from the games and cards and the series itself being able to be pumped out a rapid pace because all they needed to do was give it English voices and make edits to moon runes and rice balls and boobs and stuff.
