I didn't want them to just rehash the original. But I also didn't want whatever the rebuilds ended up becoming.

Comments like this have never made sense to me. Not when talking about Anno. There's the obvious thing that everyone brings up of working on the rebuilds for decades being the opposite of moving on. But on top of that is the attempt to contrast Eva with real life. For Anno, they were one in the same. That was his job. That was the thing that got him out of bed in the morning to go out and interact with people. That was the thing that made him friends. And it was how he was able to meet his wife.
For Anno, Eva was the opposite of escapism. His job as an anime director was the heavy burden he was barely able to bear that he wanted to run away from, like Shinji being forced to pilot an Eva. Which just makes the argument that the rebuilds indulge in escapism rather than oppose it even stronger.
