Modern pokemon players are self-inserters that want the protagonists to be their avatars rather than unique characters that go in adventures, and while GameFreak has been slowly making the protagonists and rivals older to make it easier for self-insert fags to relate to them, the trend became specially obvious during the Switch era when the hardware was strong enough to show the characters with their actual proportions rather than as chibis like in XY and earlier.Self-insertion is also why protagonists have become boring and plain. Male and female characters can't have unique traits anymore because it makes self-inserting as them harder and because adapting the clothing and accessories to the quirks of each sex is too much work for the cheap fucks at GF. This laziness is also why every clothing is "neutral". The male avatar can't have features that could be considered "sexual" for females (like an exposed chest), and the female avatar can't have "feminine" attire without limiting the options for male characters (because allowing it would cause a controversy about "gay/trans stuff in a game for kids").Sun-Moon is one of two exceptions to the trend. GameFreak intentionally made the characters young to avoid the ugly 3D chibis of XY, and because during that era GF was terrified of Yokai Watch and copied its art style in both the games and the anime. When Yokai Watch and Level-5 imploded Pokemon returned to its previous trend. The second exception was with Scarlet-Violet. The protagonists and rivals were designed with a much younger appearance than in the other Switch games in order to fit them in the school setting of Scarlet-Violet, and Florian's particularly "shota hentai" design and his relationship with Kieran made everyone think Pokemon was becoming pro-shota again, but as soon as SV's development ended GF made older protagonists again.
