There's something very pure about 90s/early 2000s anime cons. Not a lot of people outside of Japan even knew what anime was back then and anime fans were just excited to see other people who liked the same stuff. Cosplays werent that great mostly because people were more interested in dressing up to show their fandom than to impress people.

You have to go way back like 2005 and older to at least find some actual fun and good moments and times at anime conventions. As soon as people started watching videos about anime cons from Youtube then that was the moment normies and e-celebs made it a no-fun allowed zone, but the past few years before covid made it consoomer marketplace where real anime fans left. My favorite thing about it is finding old snapshots of myself from those cons. Used to go to midwest cons around 2005, it was a very formative experience for me. I loved hanging out on the forums all year and chatting about nerd stuff. Then reality hit when the con actually came around, meeting up with the people and finding out literally nobody took it seriously and I was the only person looking for friends. I remember finding people on PictoChat. When I first tarted going, I was incapable of speaking to people, a dramatically introverted hikikomori with zero social skills (most attendees). After many years, I maxed out my social stat and I am still terrified of people, and people still don't want to be my friend when I try. If somebody was at a con, they were probably with a group to cut on expense. The con years were a lot of fun and I wish I was more outgoing back then, I could have networked more effectively. I never volunteered but I should have. An interesting trend was people who you would see at every con, even months later and hundreds of miles away. Everbody was a sperg and it was cool to not feel alone for a few days.

My school anime club used to run a convention, one of the first in the state. It got shut down some time before I got there. When I was the president, I wanted to revive it but I lacked the capacity, however. Sometimes I go online to see old blogs where people talked about it and posted their pictures. It's in some early 2000s anime convention compilation videos on YouTube. I desire the earnestness of it all. It is strange to me how the time between when the last convention at my school ran and my first year of school is equivalent to the time between my first year of school and now. It felt like an ancient latent inheritance that I failed to dutifully revive. Now, my presence in the club history is approaching that same sort of horizon.

40 here, going to less cons year over year. It's honestly a mixed bag. Older cons were a little more interesting because there was less encyclopedic information available - you would go and the ONLY people there were other turbo spergs and you could talk about anime with strangers and make recommendations and shit to each other. The merch was way worse but it was also way more rare so it would be exciting to just see ANYTHING.I remember when we started to get more and more bleed-in from video games and then just "fandoms" in general and it became more of a circus. But a lot of older cons are also sort of like scrolling back in the meme folder and seeing really old shitty 4chan memes (the kind that Reddit would steal and repost to death) and really fucking cringe. The Yaoi Paddles, glompers, fat mouthbreathing fucks talking about themselves in the first person/mixing in with Japanese gibberish like Reitaxchan, etc. I guess I can understand the nostalgia for some of the friendliness/community for outcasts and misfits and the fact that there were almost no normies meant you could actually approach someone and talk to them without getting a disgusted look, but time marches on. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned the death of authenticity and I think that's pretty on the nose - things used to feel more sincere because we weren't trapped under 30000 layers of post ironic sarcasm.
