After the rains, the park has been teeming with insects, and my intrusion into the thickets had waken them up to fly as if confused around my headlamp. I carried two emptied large water bottles down the hill to the car, walking carefully to not disturb the cats. Each had a little pile of kibble and wet food mixed with lysine and taurine. The mongooses were waiting for their turn or, when they wouldn’t want to wait, making quick runs to grab a bite from the occasional unsupervised pile and steal away. There is a strict species-based hierarchy in this colony.
Ordinarily, my wife would be busy preparing the next batch of food, but this time there was something else that occupied her attention. I couldn’t make out a word from where I was, but I sensed the urgency.
“Hurry up,” I finally heard.
The cat was lying on the short grass by the road facing the food as the others were eating, but her hind legs did not seem to cooperate in supporting her slim, old body. She had been becoming friendlier in recent months, so we were a little surprised when she hissed at us. Her front legs dragged her a short distance before she collapsed again. She was in pain.
My wife grabbed her with a towel while I kept the small fabric carrier open. We left her with our friend Rin1 who lives nearby with the hope that she takes her to the vet the next morning.
“What’s her name?,” Rin texted.
“Gigi,” my wife replied.
Gigi didn’t survive the night. Rin said that she refused to eat and there was blood in the carrier. Perhaps she was hit by a car and left on the side of the road to die of her internal trauma. But instead of dying on the grass in her home surrounded by cats she knows, she died alone in a strange place with strange smells and sounds. To Gigi it made no difference that we were trying to help her; the intentions of apes were far beyond the capacity of her cognition.

The second colony down the road is about half the size of the one in the park. I always considered living there to be more precarious because people tend to drive fast, though the cats have more shelter since the road is between a high school campus and well-vegetated private properties.We trap-neuter-release (TNR) all cats, but the trapping causes complications when there is a medical case. Understandably, cats hate being in traps, and the experience leaves them with lasting trauma. Even years later, they may avoid entering a trap even if that is the only source of food. As a result, catching a cat for a second time is tricky and better done with a different technology: a drop trap instead of a traditional one, a net (gloves are necessary!), or a hard carrier with its bottom removed. All of these methods are more intense, involved, and riskier.I don’t know how she did it, but about ten days ago Rin managed to catch a cat with a growing tumor on her right ear we’ve been observing for months. White and other light-colored cats tend to be more exposed to UV rays and thus more likely to develop skin cancer. This is the diagnosis of the cat Rin named Azuki after the red beans used in Japanese desserts.
