tank is lit, looks goodi recently started a tank on my back porch to propagate some more stuff for resale, needed a new light... bought a 40W LED instead for like $55
hot damn the reds and read, floaters look better than ever
i'm probably gonna do some substrate on one side to test carpeting plants that won't grow at all in my other tanks
they don't die, they just don't carpet
lighting definitely seems worth spending more on

I want to setup a tank with floaters using a hang on back. Thinking of hanging unraveled pot scrubbers, or tied on moss to slow the flow. Will this kill the oxygenating effect of the waterfall? I read the waterfall is better than bubblers at oxegenation, but i think it came down to it creating more surface agitation.

couple months ago i got some endlers at the fish auction because they were freakin adorable
i. did. not. know. that they crossbreed with guppies, realized within a week and moved them to community tank away from guppiesapparently those fucks impregnated all my females and I didn't realize until this past week when all the juvenilles started showing color
so uh strain obliterated, new hybrid strain...
they look pretty cool though ngl

I'm so excited to get my tank going. It's funny, my brother and I get to the pet store to buy dog stuff and I say something like "I want a fishtank but don't want to spend too much" and he says "dude, I have one in the back of my car I've been trying to get rid of for weeks". We get home and sure enough there is a nice 20 gal tank already in my driveway.
I've been doing some research and so far my basic bitch plan is
>dark substrate
>a simple piece of driftwood and a rock or two
>a couple plants like java fern and anubius
>school fish like cherry barb
>cool wormy dudes like loach
>maybe an african dwarf frog or something else neat as I get the tank cycled
It will depend on what my favorite pet store has of course but that's along the lines of what I want.

Here's an idea for a tank I had. I've made terrariums before but wasn't very satisfied with the hardscape so decided to plan more thoroughly.
An arch made of Ohko stones, topped with spahgnum moss and covered with hypnum. Some plants also embedded in it (lemon fern, fig ivy). 60%fill with some waterplants like anubias. Pump is hidden in the back-leg of the arch, filter/heater in the table below it for accessibility.
Water goes from tank > pump > filter > tubes attached to the top of the stones covered in sphagnum to keep it wet.idk if Ohko hardens water like limestone but I'm thinking of just keeping the livestock very minimal. Maybe just snails and shrimp.
Dimensions are 1'x2'
Appreciate any thoughts and warnings before I start building.

i have also started a daphnia + green water culture for fun
the plant tank was getting pretty algae invested so yesterday I took some daphnia and dumped em in with 45(the guppy)
i doubt he can eat them all faster than they reproduce, maybe i'll get a good balance of algae<daphnia<45

Help me /aq/. I have a sponge filter on top of the intake for an HOB. Every 10 days it gunks up enough that I have to wring it out to restore flow. I think the problem is that it touches the gravel and is pulling mulm in. Anything I can do about that?Alternatively, I only have the sponge to not suck up shrimplets. Is that even a concern? The shrimp literally climb up the outflow and forage in the filter box.

I haven't got fish in my tank yet but just collecting the components and putting it together was very gratifying. I'm going down rabbit holes researching breeding now. Looks like a lot of fun. I hope I maintain my enthusiasm but it's quite possible I'll stock this tank and end up just going through the motions after a while. Either way I think I'll enjoy fishkeeping very much.

The cherry barbs at my preffered pet store are shabbt looking. Not red at all, no stripe. I fired up the facebook burner assuming that was the place to be to connect with hobbyists and breeders but the fish keeper groups are awful. The biggest one in the province is mostly retarded stacys posting their "rescue" bettas from petsmart and smarmy redditors lecturing her with massive paragraphs she won't read. Working with a 4' tankI was wanting to try new lights and couldn't find any availability by week aqua for a rimmed tank.
Ordered the most expensive one I could find that wasn't absurd on amazon, was the 72W $80 hygger. not the bluetooth one, 24/7 or day/night setting buttons.Just installed it, it's a dramatic difference over my previous cheap af LED. I don't actually need a timer, it gives you 4 different time periods to set different brightness settings for each W/R/G/B
Currently it's just 1 of the time periods all day, plugged into a wifi timer because I don't feel like configing all that. Definitely cool though.
The visual color saturation is immensely more appealing, everyone in my house immediately noticed.After I ordered that I looked at twinstars and can confirm they ship from korea in like 1 week, which is impressive. I'll have 1200E v5 here by weekend to compare. I don't think it'll be as impressive a difference this hygger is from the cheapest possible one. at $250 with tarrif it'll be interesting.Anyway here's a before pic, i'll grab a pic with the hygger light on later tonight when there's no window obsfucation, etc. Another when the twinstar gets here for comparison.Actually... the only picture I have is from awhile ago with way less floaters and it won't be accurate. BTW I objectively know that a more expensive light shines better. My point was that there's a lot of other things you can do to make the tank look better and lighting is down the list.This is the difference it makes when I turn the light on in the next room. Noticeably dimmer. With room lights on there be little to no visible difference between a mid line and expensive light. The only real difference is PAR output.

How do I match my tap water temp to the tank's temp when using a python to refill after a water change? so far the plan is to set the tap to a similar temp at a low pressure, hook the python up while it's running and deal with the low pressure. The tap is one of those shared levers between hot and cold so I can't count how many turns of the knobs gets my desired temp or something
