I want to add a loopcut but I don't want the cut to extend all the way upward. Is there some wizardry I can do so it only applies from hip down? thanks :)

I am mentally ill Copy-paste all the verts you want to loop Loop cut the copies Delete the verts from the original mesh Rejoin the new cut mesh using snap-to-vertex and merge-by-distance

Just temporarily subdivide one of the edges of a quad to make it an ngon and the loop cut will stop there.

Learn keyboard shortcuts to hide and unhide geometry (for me it's ctrl+h and ctrl+shift+h) what is hidden is not affected. Hide what you don't want to cut

In Edit mode: Shift+Space -> K. Put two points on the edges where you want to create new vertices, press Enter.

Select the horizontal edge that is one segment above where you want the loop cut to end. Subdivide the edge [ CTRL-E > Subdivide ]. Loop cut below as wanted. Select the vert that the subdivision created and dissolve it [ DEL > Dissolve Verticies ]. If you haven't unwrapped the UVs yet, you can just merge the vert to another instead of disolving. If the loop cut fel short, select the subdivided vert and the topmost vert the loop cut created and join the [ J ]
